The HUMAN collection by Manuel Ruiz Moriche was born not from a purely artistic question, but from an architectural one:
How can form, geometry, and material speak of the human being without literally representing it?
This sculptural series by Manuel Ruiz Moriche, co-founder and creative director of ARK Architects, is far more than an aesthetic exercise. It’s an extension of ARK’s architectural philosophy — a deep exploration of the relationship between geometry, light, shadow, and materiality, brought into the realm of art.
The sculptures —heads reimagined through abstraction— begin with a pure volume: an ovoid from which precise sections have been subtracted, evoking the timeless silhouette of a bust. That formal purity, that almost surgical precision, is no accident. It is the natural language of the architect. “Architects express ourselves through geometry,” says Manuel — and this collection is a physical reflection of that idea.
Inspired by classical Greco-Roman busts, the HUMAN pieces don’t aim to replicate, but to reinterpret. Like ARK’s architecture, they live in the balance between classical roots and modern expression — between the eternal and the now. “I don’t approach this as a sculptor,” Manuel explains. “I approach it as an architect.” And that is evident in every cut, every line, every gesture.
One of the most powerful elements of the collection is materiality. The same geometry, rendered in black marble, white marble, or charred wood, communicates entirely different emotions. Material transforms feeling, and that sensory depth is essential to the story. As in architecture, here precision and substance are bearers of meaning.
